Last June there was presented the renovation of the Anella Científica (Catalan Scientific Ring), a high speed network dedicated to universities and Catalonia's research, which has been developed by Al-Pi Telecommunications, which provides the infrastructure of the Anella, and Satec, which provides the equipment for the presence nodes.

Hereby this network, also contributed by Citilab across the I2Cat Foundation, has now two nodes of presence: the "traditional" one, placed in the Annexus building of Campus Nord and the new node, located in Telvent Housing, with a very versatile optical technology which gives a great agility of operation and maintenance (since it allows the transmission of multiple signs simultaneously). The Anella also has three nodes of territorial concentration with double capabilities placed in Gerona, Lleida and Tarragona.

Among the new functionalities, the renewed Anella allows that research groups or companies that want to experience the development of applications and services could proof them in broad band, connecting during a limited period of time to the Anella. In addition, it also allows easily the punctual increase of bandwidth without cost for current needs or sporadic experiments.

The main aim of Catalunya's Super-computing Center (CESCA) is to manage a great complexity of systems of calculation and communication in order to give service to universities and research centers, based on three areas of activity: systems for scientific calculation and for university information; communications centred on the management of the Anella Científica and the CATNIX, and the promotion of the use and benefits of these technologies. CESCA is a public consortium created on 1991 integrated by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, the Catalan Foundation for Research and the Innovation, nine Catalan universities (UB, UAB, UPC, UPF, UdG, URV, UdL, UOC and URL), and the Top Council of Scientific Researches (CSIC).

More information can be found in this press release of CESCA.
